Dear Sir,

Referring to your letter of the 15th ultimo asking to be supplied with a certified copy of the registration of the marriage of William Green and Mary Ann Green (the parents of your great grandfather William Thomas Green), I have to say that no record can be found of the registration of that marriage.

The only entry found which could possibly be considered as relating to the parties about which you are inquiring is a marriage celebrated in the 14th November, 1836 according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church, between William Green of Sydney, Bachelor, Labourer and Mary Shuttleworth, Spinster. However, this entry may possibly be ruled out on the score that in the record of the baptism of your great grandfather, William Thomas Green, his father is described as “Ginger Beer Brewer” and the baptism was performed by a Church of England minister.

If you know the date and place of death of William or Mary Ann Green and such death took place in New South Wales, the registration of such death(s) could be perused as it (they) may show the place and approximate year of marriage and also the birthplace of the party concerned. It is quite probable of course, that the marriage was not celebrated in Australia.

Receipt for 12/4 is enclosed.

Yours faithfully,

W.H. Thom

It should be noted that there are many “William Green” names in the Sydney, New South Wales vicinity in this time frame. William Thomas Green was born 9 Aug 1837 and baptized 24 Aug 1837 to William Green and Mary Ann. Another William Green was born/baptized 3 months later (recorded 5 Nov 1837/Jan 1838) to William Green and Mary. This second birth/baptism is likely the child of William Green and Mary Shuttleworth. Since there doesn’t seem to be a marriage record for William (Thomas) and Mary Ann in Australia, I have turned toward England, where there are, unfortunately, several possibilities. Without more information to go on, it is not possible at this time to determine which marriage belongs to them.
