Genealogy Trees

To protect privacy and safeguard against identity theft, anyone born within the last one hundred years is NOT included in these genealogies. More extensive records including anyone born within the last one hundred years are kept on a separate database.

Metcalfe Family Genealogies

Metcalfe Ancestral Project – This project includes the ancestry of the Metcalfe and Ottley families and many of their branches. This is an ongoing project and is constantly being added to. The file may include disconnected branches which may or may not be related but have differential value.

Charles Whittaker Project (Ancestry) – This project documents the family of Charles Whittaker (or Whitaker) of Burnley, Lancashire, England. Charles connects to the Metcalfe Family through the Ottley and Pocock branches and through his biological daughter, Margaret Cecelia Bird-Whittaker (born Margaret Lydia Whittaker), who was adopted and raised by Thomas and Elizabeth Bird after the death of Charles’ wife and his subsequent discharge from the military as an invalid. Thomas and Charles served in the military together. As part of the Metcalfe heritage, this is an ongoing project.

Relevant Non-family Genealogies/Differential Studies

A differential study is defined as a research project that is undertaken to differentiate between two or several individuals, couples or families of the same name to determine which one is the correct family member belonging in the tree. Determining these differences is beneficial for other people’s trees too.

Stephen Pocock Differential Studies: Stephen Pocock (1824-1909) of Berkshire and his wives Caroline Barton Clark(e) and Martha Shorey connect to the Metcalfe Ancestral Project above, but have been confused with other Stephen Pococks of similar ages and in the vicinity. It has been necessary to investigate them fully to differentiate them from one another.

Stephen Pocock (1827-1873) and Stephen Pocock (1827-1856): This file documents two Stephen Pococks and their families from areas in Berkshire, and includes their wives (Caroline Curtis/Maria Chapple and Mary Ann Fisher respectively) as well as siblings and other family members. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established.

Stephen Pocock (1827-1884): This file documents Stephen Pocock and his family who migrated to Canada. The parents and birth place have not been definitively established but the file includes the births/parents of two other Stephen Pococks born in 1827 in Gloucestershire and Thorns, Yorkshire as possible identities. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established. UPDATE: The Stephen Pocock of Thorns, Yorkshire has been eliminated as a possible identity of this Canadian migrant. This leaves the birth and parents in Gloucestershire as a very strong and probable identity.

Stephen Pocock (1819-1894): This file documents Stephen Pocock and his family in the Surrey area and includes his parents Samuel & Elizabeth Pocock, his three wives Louisa Pullen, Ellen Philadelphia Bull, Jane Turner, siblings, and several children. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established.

Margaret Alderson Differential Study: Margaret Alderson connects to the Metcalfe Ancestral Project in her union with Robert Raw and subsequent children, but as of yet she is a solid brick wall with her parentage and birth still to be established. This file documents another Margaret Alderson born at the same time and in the same area, and her family, ruling out a specific set of parents in question for our Margaret. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established. UPDATE 2022: I have identified Margaret Alderson’s parents as David Alderson and Agnes (Nanny) Hird and have submitted them to the Alderson Society, which they have now accepted.

John/Sarah Sewell Differential Study: John Sewell and Sarah Birkbeck connect to the Metcalfe Ancestral Project but have been easily confused with another family of the same name in the same area, John Sewell and Sarah Lees. This file documents the family of John Sewell and Sarah Lees to differentiate their family members, their family details and their places of residence. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established.

Robert/Margaret Raw Differential Study: Robert Raw and Margaret Alderson (mentioned above) of Swaledale connect to the Metcalfe Ancestral Project but have been easily confused with another family of the same name in Bolton on Swale, Robert Raw and Margaret Reading. This file documents the family of Robert Raw and Margaret Reading of Bolton on Swale to differentiate their family members, their family details and their places of residence. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established.

Raw/Cooper Project (Ancestry) – This differential project was undertaken for the benefit of a private individual who mistook an ancestor of mine with the same name (Hannah Raw), similar birth year and family members as one of her own (easy mistake!). It documents the family of Hannah Raw and James Cooper of the Redmire/Northallerton, Yorkshire, England, area and beyond. As of this date, no familial connection has been established. This project is limited in scope and not ongoing, unless a familial connection is one day established. UPDATE June 2022: This tree has now been connected to the Metcalfe Whitchurch Ancestral Project through Isabella Arundale, the wife of David Warriner. David’s mother, Mary Raw Warriner, and Hannah Raw Cooper, the subject of the project, were 1st cousins. Isabella’s aunt, Mary Arundale, was the wife of Richard Cockbone, brother of Elizabeth Cockbone, the direct ancestor of this Metcalfe family.

William Hardy Differential Study: William Hardy and his wife Jane Addison of Great Burdon/Haughton le Skerne, Durham, connect to the Metcalfe side of the Metcalfe Whitchurch Ancestral Project but have been easily confused with another family in Beverley/Houghton le Spring, Durham. This file documents the family of William Hardy and Sarah Jane Thrusk of Beverley/Houghton le Spring, Durham, to differentiate their family members, their family details and their places of residence. Though this project does not have a familial connection (as yet) to the Metcalfe Ancestral Project, it is ongoing due to interest in its aristocracy and connections to the Royal Family of England.
